Chapter Twelve
Detective Huxton shuffled in his seat, giving a huff or two. He glanced at his watch three times in a row and then at the wall clock. âTime is wasting. We canât wait for Tyler much longer.â
âI know heâll be here. When I spoke to him, he said he had something to check on or finish up, and then heâd be right over. Maybe he got held up.â I pressed my lips together and bit the inside of my lip. âLet me give him one more call. If we canât get hold of him, weâll start, and Iâll make sure to tell him everything in exact detail.â I waited for the detectiveâs nod and then quickly grabbed my phone.
The phone vibrated against my ear as the ringtone sounded loud and clear for all to hear. Two sets of eyes stared at me, and a rush of heat whooshed up my body from my neck to the top of my head. I forced a smile, slid from my chair, and moved to the other side of the room. My breathing sped as the message bank kicked in.
âThis is Tyler Broderick. Please leave a message after the tone, and Iâll get back to you at my earliest convenience.â
I held my breath and waited for the long beep. âTyler, itâs me. Where are you? You were supposed to be here by now. Detective Huxtonâs patience is wearing thin. Weâre going to start but donât worry, Iâll tell you everything. Just get here as soon as possible, and you better get here in one piece. Love you.â
Rejoining them, I placed my phone face down on the table and straightened my spine. âOkay, letâs do this. Leave Tyler to me.â
I sat at the table and watched Detective Huxton as he meticulously ran through the plan heâd conjured up prior to getting here. It sounded solid. In fact, it sounded a tad on the easy side. I knew far too well that easy was not in my vocabulary when it came to dealing with unknown magical powers.
My fingers fiddled with my phone, and my mind raced, putting the pieces of the plan together.
âI know we didnât strategise this ahead of time, but since it has been thrust upon us, itâs important weâre all clear on the plan. There are three entries to the centre of the mausoleum.â He pointed to Aunt Edie. âEdith will cover the north, I will cover the south, and Evelyn, the west. With Ashley and Tiffany waiting in the centre, once he joins them, heâll be cornered. Wherever we conceal ourselves, we must ensure we always have eyes on those two ladies.â
âExcuse me, Micah.â Aunt Edie paused, and his lips promptly shut. âIt sounds like you have given it a lot of thought, but if I may, I have a suggestion that will give us another advantage.â
He fanned his hand open and smiled. âBy all means, share your idea. Iâm all for added advantages.â
âIâll second that,â I said, resting my elbow on the table and shooting my hand up.
