Chapter Twelve

Detective Huxton shuffled in his seat, giving a huff or two. He glanced at his watch three times in a row and then at the wall clock. “Time is wasting. We can’t wait for Tyler much longer.”

“I know he’ll be here. When I spoke to him, he said he had something to check on or finish up, and then he’d be right over. Maybe he got held up.” I pressed my lips together and bit the inside of my lip. “Let me give him one more call. If we can’t get hold of him, we’ll start, and I’ll make sure to tell him everything in exact detail.” I waited for the detective’s nod and then quickly grabbed my phone.

The phone vibrated against my ear as the ringtone sounded loud and clear for all to hear. Two sets of eyes stared at me, and a rush of heat whooshed up my body from my neck to the top of my head. I forced a smile, slid from my chair, and moved to the other side of the room. My breathing sped as the message bank kicked in.

“This is Tyler Broderick. Please leave a message after the tone, and I’ll get back to you at my earliest convenience.”

I held my breath and waited for the long beep. “Tyler, it’s me. Where are you? You were supposed to be here by now. Detective Huxton’s patience is wearing thin. We’re going to start but don’t worry, I’ll tell you everything. Just get here as soon as possible, and you better get here in one piece. Love you.”

Rejoining them, I placed my phone face down on the table and straightened my spine. “Okay, let’s do this. Leave Tyler to me.”

I sat at the table and watched Detective Huxton as he meticulously ran through the plan he’d conjured up prior to getting here. It sounded solid. In fact, it sounded a tad on the easy side. I knew far too well that easy was not in my vocabulary when it came to dealing with unknown magical powers.

My fingers fiddled with my phone, and my mind raced, putting the pieces of the plan together.

“I know we didn’t strategise this ahead of time, but since it has been thrust upon us, it’s important we’re all clear on the plan. There are three entries to the centre of the mausoleum.” He pointed to Aunt Edie. “Edith will cover the north, I will cover the south, and Evelyn, the west. With Ashley and Tiffany waiting in the centre, once he joins them, he’ll be cornered. Wherever we conceal ourselves, we must ensure we always have eyes on those two ladies.”

“Excuse me, Micah.” Aunt Edie paused, and his lips promptly shut. “It sounds like you have given it a lot of thought, but if I may, I have a suggestion that will give us another advantage.”

He fanned his hand open and smiled. “By all means, share your idea. I’m all for added advantages.”

“I’ll second that,” I said, resting my elbow on the table and shooting my hand up.
